Perennial Paradise

Perennial herbs:  a certain group of plants that need their own space, they are fast growing and vigorous and like some room.  These are plants like comfrey, rhubarb, elecampane, and lemon balm.  They're are all great plants and have lots of uses, but they don't need to be the center of attention.  The bees and birds love them and they are tough.

Not so big, but also vigorous and tough, are sage, echinacea, sweet marjoram, monarda (bee balm, wild bergamot), catnip, black cohosh, and hyssop.  This gang of medium sized perennials is another bird and bee paradise.  Every one of these herbs have beautiful flowers.  They would be great in front of the big guys, a little closer to the house.  These are not just beautiful plants but also are very useful and all have healing and culinary uses.

These are the big and the medium sized perennial herbs.  They need space and they need sunshine.  You need paths for viewing and gathering.  Maybe a little bench to sit on and read about of all the wonderful things you can do with these herbs.  They are hardy robust herbs, and they do well in the cool climate of the Okanogan Highlands.  They can be a homesteader's medicine chest and spiritual retreat

These guys are all pretty wild.  They do like living in the garden but haven't been modified a lot since living in the wild.  They mix well with the perennial wildflowers since that is what they are.  A patch of blue flax near your little bench will bloom profusely all summer.  Columbines and coreopsis, shasta daisies, and black eyed susans.  I can picture it now.

Putting in a perennial garden is like planting a fruit tree, or a berry patch or an asparagus bed . Some initial work in getting a space prepared, followed by years of beauty and use.
